Delhi-NCR has once again slipped into a serious air pollution crisis. The air quality index crossed the dangerous mark of 450. This pushed authorities to act without delay. The Commission for Air Quality Management stepped in firmly. GRAP Stage Four restrictions were imposed across the region. These are the strictest pollution control measures available. Officials said the move was unavoidable. The aim is to stop further damage to public health.
Pollution experts reviewed real-time data and weather trends. They found pollution rising faster than expected. As per rules, AQI above 450 means “Severe Plus.” This automatically triggers GRAP Four. On Saturday evening, Delhi’s AQI stood at 448. Just a day earlier, it was already in the “Very Poor” zone. The jump raised alarms. Authorities said waiting longer would have worsened the situation.
GRAP Four brings strong restrictions. Construction and demolition work stops completely. Entry of non-essential diesel trucks is banned. Diesel generator use is restricted. Coal and firewood burning is prohibited. Schools may shift to online mode if needed. Offices are told to cut physical attendance sharply. The focus is to reduce pollution sources quickly. Officials admit these steps are tough but necessary.
Essential services will continue without disruption. Hospitals, pharmacies, and emergency services stay open. Public transport will operate as usual. However, private vehicle use is discouraged. Industries running on coal or heavy fuel must shut. Brick kilns and hot mix plants remain closed. Authorities said enforcement teams are on alert. Violators will face strict penalties.
Under revised rules, flexibility starts earlier. When AQI hits 301 to 400, offices move to 50 percent staff. Central government offices also follow work-from-home norms. This was earlier part of GRAP Four. Now it starts sooner. Officials say fewer vehicles on roads help immediately. Companies have been urged to cooperate fully. Employees are advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
The Air Quality Early Warning System has given a cautious forecast. Sunday is expected to remain in the severe category. Some relief may come by Monday. Pollution may fall back to “Very Poor” levels. But experts warn this is not real recovery. Weather conditions remain unfavorable. Without strong winds or rain, pollution can spike again quickly.
Officials admit Delhi’s pollution battle is far from over. GRAP rules have been tightened to act faster. Stage Three measures now begin in Stage Two itself. Diesel generator restrictions start at lower AQI levels. Power supply is being strengthened to avoid outages. The government says this is a long-term fight. Citizens are urged to stay cautious and limit outdoor exposure.
